Welcome to Why Walking Matters, The Science Explained. I'm Tatiana, your host. If you're a new listener, welcome. If you're a loyal listener, welcome back. Last week we celebrated a very special milestone, one year of the podcast. Instead of diving into the science, I shared something a little more personal. We explored the connection between walking and music through some of my favorite songs, and we heard inspiring stories from four incredible women in my hiking group about what walking means to them. And some good advice if you are trying to get off the couch and get out there and get your steps in. As I reflected on that episode, it got me thinking about something. Many of us naturally pair walking and music. It seems normal, natural. We create playlists for our walks, we choose songs that motivate us, and sometimes a great song can make us walk a little further than we planned. But is that just our imagination? Or is there actually science behind the connection between music and movement? Can music help us walk faster, further? Can it make exercise feel easier? Does the tempo of a song affect our pace? And what does the research say about walking with music versus walking in silence? Is there research? In today's episode, we're exploring the fascinating science of walking and music, and what researchers have discovered about how the songs we listen to may influence the way we move. So grab your headphones or don't, and let's get started. First, why does music feel so good during a walk? Before we get into walking specifically, it's worth remembering that music affects multiple parts of the brain simultaneously. Music engages areas involved in emotion, memory, attention, reward, and movement. Researchers have found that music can improve mood, reduce stress, and increase emotional well-being. From the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health 2022, Music and Health with the Science Sets, there is some evidence that music-based interventions may help to relieve pain associated with specific health conditions. A 2016 meta-analysis of 97 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 9,184 participants examined music-based interventions for acute or chronic pain associated with a variety of health problems and medical procedures. The overall evidence suggested that music-based interventions may have beneficial effects on both pain intensity and emotional distress from pain and may lead to decreased use of pain-relieving medicines. A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials, about 1,178 participants, examined music-based interventions for various types of chronic pain and found that the interventions reduced self-reported chronic pain and associated depressive symptoms with a greater effect when the music was chosen by the participant rather than the researcher. The study participants had a variety of conditions that can cause chronic pain, including cancer, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, or osteoarthritis, and most of the interventions involved listening to recorded music. Overall, the data suggested that as an adjuvant therapy, music reduces self-reported pain and common comorbidities associated with chronic pain. A 2013 Cochrane systematic review of 26 studies involving a total of 2,051 participants found that listening to recorded music significantly reduced anxiety in people who were waiting to have surgery. A 2016 Cochrane systematic review of 17 studies involving a total of 1,381 participants evaluated the effect of music-based interventions on anxiety in adults with cancer. The findings from the review suggested that music-based interventions may have a large anxiety-reducing effect as well as beneficial effects on pain, fatigue, and quality of life in people with cancer. However, there was potential for bias in both studies. Additional research includes Parkinson's disease, autism spectrum disorder, sleep problems, stress and stroke. The reason this research is important is because one of the biggest barriers to exercise, including walking, isn't physical, it's psychological. If music can make walking more enjoyable, we're more likely to do it consistently. And consistency, as we know, listeners, is where the real benefits happen. That leads us to speed. Can music change your walking speed? The short answer yes. Several studies have found that music influences walking pace. Researchers studying people walking in urban environments found that faster, more energetic music increased walking speed while slower music tended to slow people down. Another study found people naturally adjusted their walking rhythm to music and often walked faster when listening to music than when listening to a simple metronome beat. That study, Walking on Music from Science Direct in 2007, is one of the foundational papers examining how music affects walking behavior. The researchers wanted to know: can people naturally synchronize their walking pace to music? Does music change how fast people walk? And is walking to music different from walking to a simple metronome beat? Twenty healthy adults, 10 men, 10 women were participating. They walked while listening to music and metronome beats. Tempos ranged from 50 to 190 beats per minute. Researchers measured walking tempo, that's cadence and step rate, walking speed, and the ability to synchronize steps to the beat. They found that people naturally synchronized their steps to music. Most participants were able to match their walking rhythm to the musical beat over a surprisingly wide range of tempos. This means that when a song has a strong beat, your body tends to lock on to it automatically. They also found music made people walk faster than a metronome. Even when the tempo was identical, participants generally walked faster with music than with a simple metronome clip. This suggests music does more than provide a timing signal, it appears to increase movement energy and motivation. They also found faster music generally led to faster walking. As the tempo increased, walking speed increased as well. Participants didn't just take quicker steps, they often covered more ground. Walking and music share a natural rhythm. The researchers proposed that the relationship between music and walking is a type of resonance phenomenon. Humans seemed to have preferred movement frequency around 2 hertz, which is about 120 beats per minute, which is close to a comfortable walking cadence. It's also close to common musical tempos, the tempo people naturally prefer when tapping along to music. So why does this matter? This study helps explain why a brisk song can make a walk feel easier. People often speed up without realizing it when upbeat music comes on. Walking playlists can be used as a practical tool for exercise pacing and music-based rehab programs may help to improve gait and movement. I find this incredibly interesting, listeners. So, what this research is saying is that people naturally synchronize their steps to music. The findings suggest that walking and music share a common biological rhythm, with many people gravitating toward a tempo around 120 beats per minute. In other words, music doesn't just accompany walking, it can actively shape how we move. Interestingly, later research in real-world settings found similar effects. People often unconsciously match their step rate to music, and faster tempo music tend to increase walking speed. That 2014 study, Tempo and Walking Speed with Music in the Urban Context, took music research out of the lab and into the real world. Instead of walking on treadmills, participants walked a 1.8 kilometer route through a city while listening to music through headphones. The researchers wanted to know if people naturally synchronize their steps to music, does music change walking speed? And does music alter how people respond to their surroundings? They found most people do not naturally match their steps to the beat. This was the biggest surprise. Earlier lab studies suggested people readily synchronized walking to music, but in the real world, most participants did not spontaneously match their steps to the musical beat. Some synchronized briefly, some occasionally, and many never synchronized at all. But music still changed how fast people walk. Even without synchronization, music affected walking speed. Participants listening to faster, more energetic music walked faster than when they walked without music. Slower music encouraged a slower pace. The researchers concluded that music's effect isn't just about rhythm matching, it also affects motivation, energy, and mood. Motivational music had a powerful effect. In a second experiment, participants listened to either motivational music, which had a fast tempo, strong rhythm, and were energetic songs, or non-motivational music, which consisted of slower, calmer songs. The difference was dramatic. Motivational music walkers averaged 1.67 meters per second, while non-motivational music walkers averaged 1.47 meters per second. That's about a 14% increase in walking speed with energetic music. They found music creates an auditory bubble. The researchers explored whether music changes how people experience their environment. They found that listening to music through headphones can partially mask the influence of surroundings, noise, traffic, and visual features mattered less when participants were immersed in music. However, the environment still influenced behavior, especially in busy urban settings. They also found that personality mattered. People didn't all respond the same way. Some evidence suggested that more extroverted individuals were more likely to slow down and relax when listening to calm music, while people higher in neuroticism responded differently to motivational music. The key insight is that music doesn't need to synchronize with your steps to influence your walk. Even when people weren't consciously matching the beats, fast energetic music sped them up, slow, relaxing music slowed them down, and music changed how they experienced the environment around them. Music may shape walking behavior less through synchronization and more through motivation, mood, and energy. So listeners, we know why music feels so good when we walk, and we know that music can change our walking speed. So can music make walking feel easier? Is the next question, and things get interesting here. Research suggests music may lower perceived exertion. In other words, the walk may not actually be easier, but it can feel easier. One study examining self-paced walking found that music influenced attention and how hard participants felt they were working during exercise. The 2016 study, Effect of Music Tempo on Attentional Focus and Perceived Exertion during self-paced walking looked at whether the tempo of music changes how hard walking feels and what people think about while they walk. Researchers recruited 15 overweight and obese women and had them complete three separate 30-minute walking sessions at their own chosen pace. They used fast tempo music, medium tempo music, and no music as a control. They measured the rating of perceived exertion or how hard the walk felt, and attentional focus, whether participants focused on bodily sensations like breathing, fatigue, and muscle discomfort, or on things outside themselves, such as the music. So they found music made walking feel easier. Participants reported significantly lower perceived exertion when listening to medium tempo music compared with walking without music. In other words, they were doing the same activity, but it felt less demanding. They found that music distracted participants from discomfort. Both fast and medium tempo music increased dissociative attention, meaning participants paid less attention to fatigue, breathing, and physical discomfort, and more attention to the music. They also found faster wasn't necessarily better. One of the more interesting findings was that medium tempo music produced the greatest reduction in perceived exertion, while fast tempo music did not provide additional benefits. This suggests there may be an optimal tempo range for making exercise feel easier. This study suggests that music doesn't just make walking more enjoyable, it may actually make it feel easier by shifting attention away from physical discomfort. This could be particularly helpful for people who are new to exercise, or for individuals carrying excess weight, and for anyone trying to make walking a more sustainable habit. So walking with music helped participants focus less on fatigue and discomfort and more on the experience itself. Medium tempo music was especially effective, making a 30-minute walk feel easier than walking in silence. The lesson, the right playlist, may not just make your walk more enjoyable, it may actually reduce how hard it feels. Instead of focusing on heavy breathing, sore muscles, and how tired we feel, we focus on the lyrics, the melody, and the rhythm, which helps us to stay active longer. So where are we? Music makes us feel good when we walk, it helps with our walking speed, it helps to make walking feel easier. These studies suggest that music does more than simply entertain us while we walk. Music influences our mood, our pace, and even how difficult the walk feels. A song with an upbeat rhythm may encourage us to walk a little faster. A favorite playlist can distract us from fatigue. And because music activates parts of the brain involved in emotion and reward, it can make the experience of walking more enjoyable. And that's where motivation comes in. One of the biggest benefits may be motivation. A walk can sometimes feel repetitive. Music can add variety, emotion, energy, and anticipation. Many walkers report that certain songs become associated with movement and accomplishment, and the research supports this idea. Studies suggest that motivational music can increase exercise enjoyment and influence movement behavior. And finally, what about mental health? This may be where walking and music become a powerful combination. Walking alone can improve mood and reduce stress. Music alone can improve mood and emotional regulation. Together, they may create a uniquely positive experience. Many walkers describe music as a companion, a source of comfort, or a source of inspiration. The science supports the idea that music can influence emotional state when walking. So as we wrap up, listeners, here's the takeaway. If there's one thing that the research tells us, it's this, music won't magically make you fit, but it can make walking more enjoyable.
